Authorities from all three levels of government gathered this Saturday in Corregidora to pay tribute to municipal police officer José Luis Corona Zavala, who was killed yesterday in a direct attack while performing his duties.
The ceremony was led by Governor Mauricio Kuri and Mayor Chepe Guerrero, who accompanied the officer’s family. During the ceremony, a moment of silence was observed, gunfire was fired, and sirens were sounded, in the presence of his colleagues and senior police officers.
Corona Zavala died and one of his colleagues was injured after a gunshot attack on a patrol car on Friday morning. The attack, carried out by a group of hitmen, took place on the Querétaro-Celaya freeway, near the town of El Romeral, in that district.
The patrol car was parked near a gas station in support of Querétaro ministerial police officers conducting an investigation. A white car then pulled up behind the vehicle, and the individuals on board fired at the officers, then fled.
After the attack, an operation was launched to capture the perpetrators, involving members of the National Guard, the Mexican Army, state police, and police from municipalities surrounding Corregidora.
