The Querétaro Municipal Public Security Secretariat (SSPMQ) suspended a municipal police officer after videos circulated on social media showing officers assaulting a citizen during celebrations for the Mexico-England soccer match.
In a post on social media, the agency announced that, in accordance with its zero-tolerance policy for irregular or unprotocol-related conduct, it has launched an internal investigation to clarify the officers’ actions during the security operation in the Historic Center.
The mayor of Querétaro, Felipe Fernando Macías, confirmed that the officer involved has been suspended while the Internal Affairs division conducts its investigation.
“Clearly, this police officer failed to follow protocol. As you saw in the videos, there were provocations and insults directed at the municipal police officers; it was a breach of protocol on the officer’s part. Such actions are unacceptable,” he stated.
The incident occurred Sunday night when municipal and state police were patrolling Zenea Garden following the celebrations for the match between the Mexican and English national teams.
Videos circulating on social media show two police officers striking the man; one of them delivers a blow that causes him to lose his balance and fall to the ground.
The case has generated mixed reactions among social media users, while municipal authorities continue their investigation to determine responsibility.
