Jorge Escudero Buerva, leader of the Citizens’ Council in Quintana Roo, warned that the state is facing a loss of tourism competitiveness compared to destinations like the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, stemming from increased taxes, a lack of international promotion, and infrastructure problems that are damaging the image of the Mexican Caribbean.
The citizens’ representative pointed out that taxes such as those levied on lodging and sanitation increase the final cost for visitors, which has contributed to a decrease in tourist arrivals, as well as the loss of congresses and conventions that previously generated significant economic activity.
Escudero Buerva stated that there is currently no effective tourism promotion strategy and maintained that destinations like Tulum and Playa del Carmen are showing signs of decline and reduced economic activity. He added that Playa del Carmen’s Fifth Avenue has seen a decrease in tourist traffic compared to previous years.
He also expressed his concern about the lack of employment and the economic slowdown that, he said, is already beginning to be felt by the population. He also questioned the conditions of urban infrastructure in municipalities such as Benito Juárez and Solidaridad, where deficiencies persist in public lighting, roads and public spaces.
