The body of an unknown person was found floating Saturday morning on the embankment located behind Parque Querétaro 2000, in the capital of Querétaro.

It is suspected that this could be a fifth victim of the floodwaters that invaded the streets and avenues of the Peñuelas neighborhood and other areas in the northern part of Querétaro due to the overflowing of a drain caused by the “atypical” rainfall that occurred on the afternoon of August 22.

Neighbors whose homes live near the embankment were the ones who noticed the presence of a body in the water and reported the discovery to the Querétaro Municipal Police. Shortly after, firefighters and Civil Protection officers arrived at the scene and proceeded to remove the body from the water. Agents from the Querétaro Attorney General’s Office initiated the corresponding investigation and sent the body to the Forensic Medical Service (Semefo).

As of Saturday afternoon, the identity of the deceased was unknown.

The search for Gilberto Vega Rangel continues

A week after the storm, Gilberto Vega Rangel remains missing. According to his search report, he is 38 years old and was reported missing by his relatives on Friday, August 22, when the “unusual rain” occurred.

He was last seen on Plateros Street in the Peñuelas neighborhood. He was wearing a black shirt at the time of his disappearance. He is 1.60 meters tall and, according to his relatives, wears red woven bracelets.

So far, the bodies of four people who died due to the rain have been found, three of whom have already been identified and handed over to their relatives.

The names of the three identified individuals are: Matías Gómez, who disappeared early Saturday morning, August 23rd, while walking along Cinco de Febrero Avenue in the San José de la Montaña neighborhood of Querétaro, during the storm; his body was found on Monday in a nearby sewage canal.

Xitlali Gámez and Iris Adrián were originally from Río Verde, San Luis Potosí, but had studied and worked at a shopping mall in Querétaro located on Pie de la Cuesta Avenue in the Peñuelas neighborhood, one of the areas hardest hit by the downpour that lasted more than eight hours.

The bodies of both friends were found two and a half hours later that same Friday, August 22nd, but they were not identified until Monday by their relatives, who had lost contact with them by phone.

A fourth body was also found, which, according to the Querétaro Attorney General’s Office, is another victim of the rains.
