In 10 years, at least 20,000 people have left downtown Querétaro.

In the last decade, nearly 20,000 people have left Querétaro’s Historic Center, revealed Marco Álvarez Malo, superintendent of the area. This population loss has largely been due to the lack of adequate conditions for comfortable urban living, such as security and efficient mobility.

Given this situation, the municipal government has begun exploring strategies to attract new residents, with the goal of reactivating daily life in this emblematic area and not leaving it exclusively in the hands of commerce or tourism.

Álvarez Malo denied that the abandonment of the center is due to a process of gentrification, although he did point out that it is urgent to attract a population that will remain for at least six months, as this would facilitate both community strengthening and citizen collaboration in monitoring inappropriate behavior.

Among the possible actions being considered is the provision of support or incentives to those who decide to invest in properties for students or working people, as part of a strategy to repopulate the area and foster neighborhood coexistence.

Currently, the Historic Center maintains an approximate ratio of 70 percent residential use to 30 percent commercial use, which has helped moderate the population decline. However, the superintendent acknowledged that it is essential to continue creating conditions that make living in the heart of Querétaro’s capital attractive.
