Nine of Querétaro’s 26 dams are at 100% capacity, reported Javier Amaya Torres, the state coordinator of Civil Protection. Among the dams that reached their maximum level are El Carmen Pirules and Jesús María, located in the municipality of El Marqués, as well as the Cajón dams in the capital of Querétaro. It has also been reported that the Jalpan, La Soledad (in Colón), Coto (in San Juan del Río), and the Constitución de 1857 Diversion dams have reached their storage limits.
Authorities have received 18 operating policies from the National Water Commission (Conagua) to coordinate releases and minimize risks to the population. To date, 618 cases have been reported for damages related to the rains, in addition to 68 cases of fallen trees.
Likewise, 42 inspections have been carried out on sumps along the Paseo 5 de Febrero Avenue section to ensure their operation due to water saturation. Amaya Torres indicated that four basins in the state are currently saturated due to the heavy rains recorded in the last 72 hours. Civil Protection maintains ongoing coordination with the state’s 18 municipalities, giving priority attention to areas where dams have reached their maximum capacity.
