A vehicular bridge with a pedestrian crossing collapsed due to strong river currents in the town of El Chilar in the municipality of Tolimán, Querétaro, reported Mayor Alejo Sánchez de Santiago.
The municipality’s Public Works Department indicated that they are already working on a technical and risk assessment so that rehabilitation work can begin as soon as possible.
The mayor explained that the river levels that flow through the town are the result of the release of dams located in the neighboring municipality of Colón.
He reported that, if necessary, the population will be evacuated, and shelters have already been set up to accommodate them.
He assured that, despite this incident, the community was not cut off or isolated, as they can travel to the municipal seats of both Tolimán and Colón via other roads. In addition, the authorities urged residents not to approach the collapsed area and to report any risky situation to the emergency number 911.
Work on the construction of a new bridge is expected to begin once the river flow allows.
Authorities reported the collapse of two more bridges, one in the town of Nogales and one in the Don Lucas neighborhood, both due to rising river levels. No deaths or injuries have been reported so far in all three cases.
