Residents of the state of Querétaro were surprised on the afternoon of Saturday, May 31, after witnessing the fall of a suspected meteorite in broad daylight. Videos posted on social media show the phenomenon occurring around 5:06 p.m., while people’s surprised reactions can be heard in the background. Some of them were driving their vehicles when the object ended the calm in the sky.
Dozens of users commented on the appearance of the alleged meteorite in X with messages such as “I’m sure I saw a meteorite pass by,” “Did anyone else see it too?”, “It was the most beautiful thing I’ve seen in a long time,” among others. The exact location of the meteorite’s fall is still unknown, but it left a pleasant memory for those lucky enough to witness it despite its fleeting passage.
Security cameras, vehicle cameras, and many others managed to capture these rarely seen moments anywhere in the world. These phenomena attract attention because in some cases they are asteroids and in others, false alarms. The good news for those who saw the trail of light is that within a few hours, the objects were confirmed to have entered Earth’s orbit.
Was it a meteorite? This is what the authorities said
While residents of Querétaro reported the sighting of a possible meteorite, it was authorities in San Luis Potosí who confirmed the asteroid’s entry. The State Civil Protection Coordination reported that it consulted NASA’s Planetary Defense platform and identified five objects that had recently entered Earth, including a nearby one called 2025 KS8.
“Five asteroids have been identified entering Earth’s orbit. The closest, called 2025 KS8, could be leaving debris in its wake, which is believed to be what was seen in the skies of San Luis Potosí, as something similar was observed in Querétaro,” the agency stated. It then asked the public not to be alarmed and invited them to seek information from official sources.
