A reflection of the state’s consolidation as an expanding industrial center, says UAQ specialist

Querétaro has experienced a population growth of 21% between 2012 and 2022. This significant increase in population is a reflection of the state’s consolidation as a major industrial center in Mexico, which is established in new residential developments being built on the outskirts of the capital city.

During the past decade, demographic growth has led to the construction of new residential developments on the periphery of the city. These developments not only responded to the demand for housing generated by population growth but also posed significant challenges for urban planning and municipal territory management.

“Querétaro has become an expanding industrial city, driven by sectors such as manufacturing and technology,” explained Javier Rodríguez, an urban planner from the University of Querétaro (UAQ), who has studied the city’s urban development. “This growth has contributed to the expansion of the urban area, with the appearance of new colonies and settlements seeking to satisfy the housing demand of the growing population.”

According to the Municipal Economic Yearbook 2023, since 2012, when the registered population was 830,608 inhabitants, to 2022, with a total of 1,007923 people Querétaro has experienced constant growth by 21% in 10 years.
