Tesla Inc CEO Elon Musk made good on his promise to sell “Tesla Tequila” two years after revealing his plans in a tweet and the bottles – at $ 250 each – flew quickly from the virtual store.
The images show a glowing bottle shaped like a lightning bolt, very different from what Musk teased when promoting his tequila.
It’s not the first time the Silicon Valley billionaire has sold wacky products in limited one-time deals.
He sold flamethrowers for $ 500 in early 2018, raising $ 10 million for his high-speed tunnel venture The Boring Company. Musk had also previously sold 50,000 The Boring Company hats.
He tweeted the idea of “Teslaquila” on April Fools’ Day in 2018, something that was considered a joke by many of his followers. However, Musk’s attempts to trademark the drink in October of that year were poorly received by Mexican producers.
The Mexican Tequila Regulatory Council argued at the time that “the name ‘Teslaquila’ evokes the word tequila (…) (and) tequila is a protected word”.
According to the website, Tesla’s tequila will be available only in some US states, such as New York, California, and Washington.
The website describes the drink, produced by Nosotros Tequila, as aged agave tequila aged in French oak barrels, “with a hint of dried fruit and light vanilla on the nose and a balanced finish of cinnamon and pepper.”
