Residents halt Mexico-Querétaro train studies in a town in Cuautitlán; they accuse the authorities of lacking information about mitigation works.

Considering the lack of accurate information regarding the mitigation projects for the Mexico-Querétaro train construction, residents of San Mateo Ixtacalco prevented workers from conducting soil mechanics studies last night. They stated that they have only been verbally informed that bridges will be built and fear that this will affect the community’s identity.

Apolonio Urban, head of the San Mateo Ixtacalco neighborhood commission, explained in an interview that the federal government has refused to show them the project details. As a result, a group of residents decided to ring the town’s bells, which led to the work being halted.

“The government hasn’t brought a project, they haven’t brought anything. We’ve already told them about the mitigation works, we’ve already told them about the overpass, we’ve already told them about vehicular bridges, we’ve already told them about pedestrian bridges, and all they bring is a notebook. They tear out a page and with a pencil tell you: ‘This is where it’s going to be,’ and ‘Here are the pillars for the bridge,'” Urban stated.

Apolonio added that the people’s discontent isn’t specifically about the construction of the train to Querétaro, but rather that the authorities haven’t agreed to show the project documents at the informational meetings held in this community. This lack of information is what led residents to stop the workers who arrived to conduct soil mechanics studies around 9:00 p.m. yesterday.

Urban recalled that in the town of Ixtacalco, a vehicular bridge, built more than 40 years ago and no longer in use, has already been removed. This was part of the federal government’s initial actions regarding the Mexico City-Querétaro train route through that community.

Other actions taken included the felling of trees, the removal of the bike path, and the opening of the Ferrocarriles Nacionales Oriente roadway, with the purpose of widening the freight track.
