•The Governor will send an Animal Welfare Bill to the State Congress.
•It seeks to recognize animals as sentient beings, with the right to live a dignified life, free from abuse, suffering, and abandonment.
•There will be severe sanctions against those who do not comply with the stated measures.
In order to safeguard the integrity of animals, Governor Mauricio Kuri González, through a video on social media, announced that he will send an Animal Welfare Bill to the State Congress. This bill recognizes animals as sentient beings, with the right to live without cruelty, with dignity, and with the right to live without abuse, abandonment, and suffering.
“In Querétaro, we respect all forms of life, the environment, family, our friends, and colleagues. This initiative incorporates the best of the animal welfare models already implemented in other highly advanced countries. It is a law that places our Querétaro at the forefront,” he expressed.
Kuri González added that it’s time for Querétaro to take a step to the next level in terms of care and respect, asserting that a society that cares for and looks after its animals is a more sensitive, empathetic, and fairer place. For this reason, she said, education, awareness, and respect are also promoted.
“This is a call for shared responsibility among pet owners, neighbors, and citizens; we can all care, respect, report when necessary, and teach new generations that every living being deserves dignity. Querétaro is growing in construction, technology, and investment, but this step shows that we are also growing in awareness; that we are not only building infrastructure, we are also building values,” she stated.
She added that she also prohibits online sales, the use of restraint collars, and many other cruel practices. At the same time, he said, this law establishes obligations, such as providing them with sufficient food and water, as well as timely medical care and decent spaces, otherwise, severe sanctions will be imposed on those who fail to comply with the measures.
“We cannot continue to be indifferent to abuse; we cannot ignore the suffering of those without a voice. This new law establishes very clear responsibilities for those who own pets; it prohibits abandonment, abuse, cruelty, and neglect; and it prohibits keeping them locked up in inadequate conditions,” he concluded.
