The recognition was given for the implementation of solar trash cans to optimize solid waste management.
These innovative solar bins, installed in the municipality, utilize advanced compacting technology, increasing storage capacity up to five times more than conventional bins.
They also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prevent waste overflow.
Equipped with sensors that monitor real-time fill levels, these bins promote proper waste separation, including compartments for general waste, recyclables, and cigarette butts.
Their construction from recycled materials makes them resilient to adverse weather conditions, allowing installation in public squares, parks, event venues, and cultural and sports centers across Querétaro.
Mayor Luis Nava acknowledged the commitment to innovation and sustainability, benefiting citizens and the environment.
With this award, Querétaro now boasts nine ATEGRUS honors: one Silver Broom, one Gold Broom, and seven Platinum Brooms. The Platinum Broom, bestowed every two years since 1987, recognizes institutions and organizations driving advancements in urban waste management, cleanliness, and awareness, ultimately enhancing our quality of life and sustainability.
