Behaviors such as speeding, using a cell phone while driving, hard braking, and sudden acceleration placed Querétaro at the top of the national ranking for risky driving compiled by Life360 for 2026.
Querétaro scored 73.25 on the platform’s Driving Index, which evaluates various behaviors associated with vehicle operation. Aguascalientes took second place with 72.1 points, while Quintana Roo ranked third with 69.80.
The study considered five factors to create the ranking: speeding, cell phone use while driving, hard braking, sudden acceleration, and nighttime driving. Based on these indicators, a score is assigned on a scale of 0 to 100.
Querétaro’s ranking comes at a time when mobility has become a key topic of discussion—particularly in the metropolitan area—driven by the growing number of vehicles, urban expansion, and an increase in daily commutes between municipalities.
These results align with a situation where thousands of accidents occur annually; according to the latest report on Land Traffic Accidents in Urban and Suburban Areas from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), 8,869 accidents were recorded in the state’s urban areas during 2024.
This figure represents an average of more than 24 accidents per day in the state’s urban areas. Furthermore, official records show that these incidents resulted in 167 fatalities and 1,516 injuries.
The data also indicate that there were 3.40 accidents per 1,000 inhabitants in Querétaro during 2024—a rate that helps contextualize the incidence of road accidents relative to the state’s population size. Regarding this metric, nearly half of the accidents recorded in the state occurred in the municipality of Querétaro, which accounted for 3,584 incidents. Corregidora ranked second with 967 accidents, followed by San Juan del Río with 950, El Marqués with 672, and Tequisquiapan with 431.
Collectively, these five municipalities accounted for 6,604 accidents—representing nearly three-quarters of all traffic incidents recorded in the state during 2024.

Inegi figures also show a decline in the number of recorded accidents over recent years. In 2023, there were 9,307 incidents; in 2022, there were 10,767; in 2021, the total was 11,035; and in 2020, 10,050 were reported.
Additionally, data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System indicate that, during the first four months of the year, 447 people were recorded as killed or injured in traffic accidents within the state.
These statistics comprise 122 victims of negligent homicide resulting from traffic incidents and 325 people injured in accidents on Querétaro’s roadways.
Added to this are figures from the Ministry of Health’s Epidemiological Bulletin; so far in 2026, 69 pedestrians have been reported injured in traffic incidents in Querétaro—50 men and 19 women.
The same document notes that, during the year, 2,933 people involved in motor vehicle accidents required medical attention. Of these, 1,552 were men and 1,381 were women. Data from federal agencies show that the state tops the national rankings for risky driving, while recording thousands of traffic accidents each year and hundreds of injuries or fatalities in incidents related to vehicular traffic.
