With an investment of 200 million pesos of its own revenues, the Querétaro International Airport (AIQ) has strengthened its infrastructure as part of a long-term master plan that projects its development until 2054, informed the Secretary of Sustainable Development (Sedesu), Marco Antonio del Prete Tercero.
According to the official, the objective is for the airport to consolidate itself as a strategic pole, not only in terms of air connectivity, but also as a detonator of investment and regional economic development, by integrating with industrial parks and complementary services that already operate in its surroundings.
He explained that the design of the AIQ contemplates its gradual growth both in the passenger terminal and in contact positions and operational capacity, which will allow reaching up to 20 positions for aircraft, a level similar to that currently held by the Felipe Ángeles International Airport. At its maximum expansion, the airport could operate up to 15 million passengers a year.
Regarding the recent behavior, he explained that in 2025 the airport closed with 2 million 426 thousand passengers, which represented a growth of 16 percent compared to the previous year. Of the total, 70 percent corresponded to domestic flights and 30 percent to international flights. Since 2021, the cumulative increase in passenger numbers has been 191 percent.
“We have been building a model for the airport, so that the airport becomes a pole of attraction, and you have heard, it has been commented on the Airport City project (…) And so far in Governor Kuri’s administration, the number of passengers has grown 91 percent in 2021, which we closed with 833 thousand; today we are at two million 426 thousand, and the estimate is that this year we will reach almost three million passengers,” he estimated.
Air cargo has also shown a positive behavior, since during the last year, 83 thousand tons were mobilized, almost 8 percent more than in 2024, which positions AIQ as the fourth airport nationwide in cargo volume. Since the beginning of the current state administration, the accumulated growth in this area is 28.4 percent.
Del Prete Tercero highlighted that, as part of the infrastructure improvements, a long-stay parking lot with 400 spaces was built, progress is being made in the construction of an 80-room business-class hotel in front of the terminal, and new telescopic corridors, autonomous immigration filters, and attention modules for international flights were installed, which have significantly reduced passenger processing times.
“The arrival flight from Madrid is dispatched in less than 45 minutes from the time the first passenger leaves the plane until the last passenger leaves the airport,” he said.
Likewise, baggage belts were adapted, mobile walls were implemented to serve simultaneous flights, and access filters to boarding lounges are optimized with electronic boarding pass readers, in addition to flexible counters for airlines.
