Cofepris publishes list of Mexican beaches unsuitable for these winter holidays

The Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS), in coordination with state health authorities and the National Network of Public Health Laboratories, collected seawater samples during the weeks leading up to the 2025 winter vacation period. The purpose of this was to determine whether or not a beach posed a health risk.

During the 2025 pre-vacation period, laboratory analyses of 2,233 water samples from 289 of the most popular beaches in the country’s main tourist destinations revealed that 283 beaches are suitable for recreational use, while the following beaches are considered UNSUITABLE for recreational use. This is because they exceeded the established quality criteria for protecting the public:

Baja California: Tijuana Beach in Tijuana.

Jalisco: Mismaloya Beach.

Sonora: El Veneno/Miramar Beach and San Francisco Beach.

Tamaulipas: Barra del Tordo Beach. Veracruz: José Martí Beach.

It is important to note that several factors affect water quality, including stormwater runoff, discharges of treated wastewater, informal settlements, pollution from runoff, informal commerce, and fish processing. The large influx of beachgoers during certain times of the year and the lack of adequate sanitation and sewage infrastructure also contribute to the problem.

The public is urged to help keep the beaches clean during the holiday season, as this is everyone’s responsibility.

Any issues related to water quality can be reported directly to the Beach Committees established in the various tourist destinations throughout the country, as well as on the websites of Cofepris (Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks) and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT).
