Querétaro reported that 1.6% of marriages celebrated in its territory were same-sex unions.
With this data, the state ranked 12th nationwide, above the national average of 1.3%, according to the report released by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) on the occasion of International LGBTI+ Pride Day.
Nationally, same-sex marriages represented 1.3% of the total. 60% of these unions were between women and 40% between men. The figures come from administrative records collected by the country’s Civil Registry courts.
Mexico City had the highest proportion of same-sex marriages relative to its total civil unions, with 4.8%. Baja California followed with 2.5% and Jalisco with 2.3%.
In contrast, the states with the lowest proportion of registrations were Veracruz, with 0.01%, Guerrero with 0.2%, and Chiapas, also with 0.2%.
Querétaro was among the states with the highest relative presence of this type of marriage, exceeding the national average and ranking above states with larger populations.
In total, 501,529 marriages were registered nationwide. Of these, 6,606 were between people of the same sex, while 494,923 were between people of different sexes.
The document also details the gender ratio of the couples who married. Of the 6,606 registered same-sex marriages, 3,964 were between women and 2,642 were between men.
