The state’s vineyards will be able to apply for the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) seal to highlight that the product was 100% made in Querétaro, said Halina Gama, director of the Wine Cluster.

She specified that they hope to be able to apply for the Q wine seal based on the PGI granted by the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property by the end of the year.

“Yes, they will have a seal. As they obtain them, they will be given a distinctive mark so that consumers know that the wine has its PGI,” she stated.

The recognition is due to the fact that their system includes environmental goals, policies, and procedures to achieve excellence.

She specified that after obtaining the PGI, they are in the process of establishing the operating rules for granting it.

“So, this document with the operating rules will be made available to all vineyards who want to apply. So right now, there are no vineyards in the process,” she emphasized.

She explained that the operating rules state that only wine labels harvested, produced, and packaged 100% in the state will be eligible for the designation.

“There will be many labels that can apply to obtain this PGI, while others will not. For example, there are vineyards that have, for example, four Sala Vivé regions, which are from four regions: Aguascalientes, Querétaro, and Guanajuato. That wine, for example, that specific label will not be able to obtain the PGI because it is solely from the Querétaro region,” she explained.

10% IEPS Requested for Querétaro’s Wine Sector

Tania Palacios presented an initiative to lower the IEPS by 16.5% on domestic wine, in order to make it more competitive compared to imported products.
She emphasized that several vineyards belonging to the cluster will be able to obtain this designation, but they will have to review how many wine labels meet the requirements.

He asserted that obtaining this designation was a three-year process and brings value to Querétaro wine, as consumers will be able to rest assured that it is 100% made in Querétaro.
