Federal Deputy Tania Palacios, president of the Tourism Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, welcomed the decision to postpone the collection of the 42 USD tax on tourists arriving in Mexico by sea.

The legislator stressed the importance of carefully analyzing any tax, especially when its application can affect the competitiveness of the tourism industry, a key pillar for the national economy.

“I recognize the sensitivity shown by postponing this tax, since maritime tourism generates a significant economic spillover in coastal destinations and contributes directly to the development of local communities. Every tax must be carefully evaluated, taking into account its impact on the sectors involved and on the perception that international visitors have of Mexico as a competitive and attractive destination,” said Tania Palacios.

She also recognized the work of the Federal Tourism Secretariat for its openness to dialogue and for working in a coordinated manner with legislators and representatives of the tourism sector to find solutions that strengthen the industry without compromising its competitiveness. “It is essential that decisions regarding tourism be supported by a comprehensive analysis that prioritizes the sustainable development of this strategic sector for the country,” she stressed.

The deputy emphasized that Mexico must maintain its leadership as one of the main tourist destinations worldwide and ensure that public policies favor the sustainable growth of the sector. In addition, she expressed her commitment to work together with the different actors involved to find solutions that promote tourism and benefit local communities.

Finally, she called on the authorities and her fellow legislators to ensure that this postponement allows for a constructive dialogue between the government, tourism companies and local communities, in order to ensure that any fiscal measure is fair, equitable and in line with the needs of the sector.

“Tourism is a source of employment, well-being and national pride. Every decision we make must have its sustainable and competitive development as a priority,” concluded the deputy.
