Former mayor of Corregidora, Querétaro, arrested for embezzlement of public funds

The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office of Querétaro reported that it arrested Carmelo Mendieta, the former PRI mayor of Corregidora, accused of the crime of embezzlement.

In a statement, the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Corruption detailed that it carried out an arrest warrant against the former official who served as mayor of Corregidora between 2009 and 2012, for the crime of embezzlement, to the detriment of the public service and the treasury of the City Council.

“The detainee will be made available to the judicial authority to determine his situation in the criminal process,” reads the information card.

Carmelo Mendieta had already been arrested for this crime in 2020, but was released. So far it is unknown if this former official was arrested for the same case or if the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office is investigating him for a new criminal process.

According to the newspaper Milenio, the diversion of resources that Carmelo made was for the purchase and sale of a piece of land valued at 9 million pesos. These resources could not be proven, so he was denounced by a private individual.

During his period as an official, the former mayor bought a house with resources of illicit origin. It was reported that this acquisition was made through a third party who, according to investigations, did not have the financial solvency to acquire the property.

Victims of massacre in Querétaro were investigated in Guanajuato; they had already suffered an attack

The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Querétaro (FGE) has revealed that the five people murdered in the community of Jesús María, in the municipality of El Marqués, had been the target of a previous attack in Guanajuato, which led them to seek refuge in Querétaro. This attack occurred in the early hours of October 9, when two armed individuals broke into a home and shot four women and a man, according to the Municipal Public Security and Traffic Department.

The neighbors, alerted by the shots, notified the Municipal Police, who arrived at the scene to find the victims dead. The local authorities immediately informed the FGE, which began the relevant investigations. The Attorney General’s Office confirmed that the victims had several open investigation files in Guanajuato, although the related crimes were not detailed.

The attack has generated an operation to search for those responsible, who have not yet been located. The Municipal Police of El Marqués has requested the support of the security corporations of neighboring municipalities to find the whereabouts of the attackers. As of the morning of October 10, there has been no information on the capture of the suspects nor have the identities of the victims been revealed.

This incident has surprised the Querétaro community, since, according to daily reports from the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), headed by Omar García Harfuch, no homicide had been recorded in the state between October 1 and 8. The FGE has established contact with the Guanajuato authorities to coordinate actions that will clarify the events and determine the causes behind this violent attack.

The proceedings are being carried out by specialized prosecutors, as well as by forensic and police personnel, who are working on obtaining and processing data from the evidence collected at the crime scene. The community of Jesús María remains on alert while the authorities continue with the investigations to solve this case that has shocked the region.
